Gotu Kola Benefits for Skin

Gotu kola (centella asiatica), also called “Brahmi” in Sanskrit, means “knowledge” and if it could be personified, it would be one of the wisest plants of the plant kingdom!

Native to the tropical island of the Indian Ocean and India and found in parts of China, Japan, Australia, and the U.S., gotu kola is sometimes referred to as “Tiger’s Grass” because wounded Bengal tigers have been known to roll in it after a fight. Also, with its reputation of providing long life, elephants have also been known to consume gotu kola.

A staple in Chinese, Indonesian, and Ayurvedic medicine, the leaves of gotu kola are known to aid the Crown chakra, which associated with the element of thought. As such, it’s said to help aid memory and boost the immune system.*

As if all these benefits weren’t enough, gotu kola has also been found to be beneficial to the skin providing positive aging benefits and so much more.* Read on to learn about the benefits of gotu kola for your skin.

Gotu Kola Benefits for Skin – What the Research Shows

Many of gotu kola’s skin care benefits come down to its potential for calming inflammation, encouraging the production of collagen, acting as an antioxidant, and improving skin hydration (just to name a few). Here we’ll take a closer look at some of its top benefits:

  • Collage Production & Antioxidants - Primarily found in sun-care, anti-aging products and supplements, gotu kola promotes collagen production in the skin, reduces stretchmarks and scars, and increases antioxidant levels in newly formed tissues. What’s more, it helps firm, tighten, and prevent saggy skin.*

According to a study in 2013, gotu kola can reduce the appearance of stretch marks. It was found that the terpenoids found in gotu kola increase collagen production in the body which may help prevent new stretch marks from forming, as well as help heal any existing marks*.

  • Healing & Inflammation- Full of triterpenoids (a compound that helps keep skin tighter and firmer), vitamins B and C, flavonoids (phytonutrients that act as antioxidants to fight off free radical damage), tannins and polyphenol, gotu kola has been found to prevent bacterial growth, promote the production of new skin cells, and enhance the resilience of the skin by calming inflammation.

A study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry in 2019, for instance, found that when gotu kola was applied to skin with acne, gotu kola supported a reduction in inflammation.*

  • Increased Hydration – Studies suggest that gotu kola can also be extremely effective at improving skin hydration.*

Gotu Kola Benefits for Skin

In another study published in 2017, researchers tested out a fluid containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and gotu kola extract on 20 women’s forearms over the course of a day. One arm got the fluid containing gotu kola while the other forearm got a control cream. The hydration level and amount of water lost was measured by researchers throughout the day. Results showed that there was significantly more hydration and less water loss in the arm that got the fluid containing gotu kola than the arm that got the control cream and both participants’ baseline measurements.

  • Veins, Cellulite & Hair Loss – If you suffer from varicose veins or cellulite, gotu kola is also known to help repair veins on your skin. Also because it increases blood circulation and can deeply penetrate the skin, it’s also widely used for the treatment of cellulite by shrinking connective tissues that bind fat cells under the skin. Furthermore, increased blood circulation has also been shown to help with hair loss problems as better circulation means improved delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the scalp.*
  • Fine lines & Sun Damage – Gotu kola has also been found to aid in fine lines and sun damage.

In a study, published in 2008, researchers had twenty participants with sun damaged skin apply a cream containing ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and gotu kola on their face, one arm, and one half of their neck and chest area twice a day. They applied a control cream to the other half of their neck and chest area and the other arm. (They used a separate tube for the face, so they didn’t know which cream was in it.)

After six months, the researchers saw that participants had significant improvements in firmness, wrinkles, and hydration.

Also in support of this, another study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science in 2008, had 27 women apply an eye cream containing gotu kola to one eye and a control eye cream to the other eye twice a day for 12 weeks. The study concluded that those who received the gotu kola eye cream had significantly improved wrinkle depth compared to those in the control group, leading to the finding that gotu kola can help reduce wrinkles around the eyes.
