If you’re reading this article, you’re probably already in a hot cocoa mood. That means it’s likely cold outside, maybe even snowing, and that something warm and cozy sounds like the best thing in the world. Drinking this is like getting a warm hug from your grandma or wrapping yourself in a blanket in front of a fire. Ya – it’s that cozy.
This drink is what we make when we just can’t warm up fast enough and when we’re having a serious chocolate craving. What’s awesome about this drink is that it’s so simple. It has just 5 ingredients:
Peppermint Oil
Oat Milk
Water
Vegan Marshmallows
Origins of Hot Chocolate
Chocolate is the result of careful cultivation and procession of the precious cacao bean. Its history is thought to date back to the Olmecs who were the earliest known Mesoamerican civilization. Cacao, however, has been grown and made into a drink since at least the 9th century. Mayans famously drank a bitter ceremonial cacao drink made with cacao, cornmeal, and other spices.
Most people these days consume chocolate that is not in its purest form. Copina Co.’s Cacao Calm uses only Organic cacao powder which is ground cacao in its purest, most flavorful, and most antioxidant-dense form. Typical cocoa powder is processed at a higher temperature than cacao powder, making it less nutrient dense, and is also combined with milk, sugar, oils, and fillers. You deserve something better in your hot cocoa.
How to Make a Vegan Peppermint Hot Cocoa
Fortunately for you, this superfood peppermint hot cocoa is made with just a few simple ingredients and can be made a few ways.
Our favorite way of making this drink is to use a hand frother to combine it perfectly. We use a big mug and add the heated hot milk and water and add all the ingredients except the marshmallows directly into the cup and then use the hand frother to combine. Add marshmallows to finish and sip!
You can also use a blender to make your hot cocoa! One of our favorite blenders is Ninja, though any blender that can withstand heat will work! All you do is add all ingredients except the marshmallows to the blender, blend until combined and frothy, pour into a favorite mug, and top with marshmallows!
Another method is by stovetop! This is perfect if you enjoy the slow, meditative process of heating your drinks this way. To make your vegan mint hot cocoa this way add all ingredients except the marshmallows over the stove, stirring the ingredients together until they’re warm- not boiling- and combined.
Best Way to Top A Hot Cocoa
Umm we’re glad you asked! Marshmallows are the classic, but have you ever tried these things? A little ground cinnamon on top can add some really nice spice to a foamy hot cocoa. Same with grainy sea salt. We also love some shaved dark chocolate or even chocolate chips on top. If you’re looking to get creative and enjoy something decadent, a drizzle of tahini or puff of coconut whipped cream on top is absolutely amazing.
